June 17th 1950 What causes stress varies from person to person. A small stressor repeatedly encountered perceived to be worrying may cause damage because the stress response is once again triggered. Numerous small "triggerings" can develop into a generalized response. Learning to resolve or deal with stress is one of the most helpful and healthful things we can do for ourselves. On the HSE web site for the UK in 2011/2012 the number of cases of stress represented 40% for all work related illness with the occupations with the highest rates of stress being health professionals, teaching and educational professionals, and the caring-personal service professionals. Ref www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/causdis/stress/index.htm It appears all non essential biological systems involved with the flight/fight response effectively get "turned down" during stress so these systems work far less efficiently, examples of such systems include the digestive system, the immune system and the reproductive system. As reflexology can generate powerful relaxation as well as release a surge of endorphins that result in an improved feeling of well being it can help the body to counteract stress far better. |
